The Unwilling Suspension Of Disbelief

Ghost City 2710

Have you noticed how little science fiction is being written these days? One by one the magazines have disappeared; Worlds Of If, Galaxy, even Amazing. The monthly newsletter of the Science Fiction Book Club features less and less actual science fiction each month and more fantasy or media derived fiction. Vampires and creatures of the night have replaced asteroid belts and hard-core rock miners.

I believe this is due in part to the unwilling suspension of disbelief. For science fiction to work, the audience must believe the events in the story to be at least possible. Sadly, it would seem even the writers can no longer do this; even they do not believe the human race will ever visit the planets of our own solar system, much less establish colonies there. The technology to go there may exist but the political will and more to the point the money, is not. Like the picture above, the future is foggy and uncertain. Few people, even hard-core science fiction buffs such as myself, really believe in space colonies or starships any more.

Tracks In The Snow 2899

Enough ranting for now. The 2010 riding season continues. I managed to get out three times in January and twice so far in February. Chinooks are wonderful. The pathway is still snow-covered for some portions, especially by the tree farm but with a bit of work and low gears, it's navigable almost all the way to Heather Glen.
