I finally managed to get published! Well, sort of. A picture I took of the Heartland Café has been selected for inclusion in Schmap Calgary Sixth Edition Okay so it's not a novel or even a short story but it is something I did. I'll never be a professional photographer any more than I'm all that likely to become a professional writer. So what? Photography like writing, has its own rewards.
Photos are tiny slices of time and as such stir memories of where and when they were taken. Years ago I had a roommate who was a big fan of health food. Since I was a junk food junkie at the time he felt obliged to change my diet. The Heartland Cafe was one such effort. Neither of us had a car at the time and it was within walking distance.
I did eventually wean myself from the junk food but never did embrace health food diets the way he did. On the other hand I'm still here, sucking in air under my own power and taking up space. Like the cafe, we carry on as best we can amidst a changing world. It's a good photo and the memories attached to it are fond ones.
I used to joke that if it weren't for flashbacks I'd have no memories of the seventies. A bit of an exageration but there are large portions of that decade that are just a wee bit fuzzy. The few photographs I have from that period are precious to me even if I did not take them. Only since the advent of digital cameras have I had any interest. I like being able to shoot and print the picture in the same day or just leave it to clutter up the hard drive. If nothing else they can always be used for a screensaver.
