A Future we can believe in

Canadian politics have (thankfully) gone back to their usual boring state that we can blissfully ignore. With one stooge removed from the act, the others seem willing to behave themselves for the moment. Of course this might just be because the eyes of the world are opon them with America's president in town.

As I watched Barackomania sweep Ottawa I was left wondering is this has ever happened before. Has there ever been an American president this popular? Sadly yes. Once before there was a young and vigorous president that everyone loved. Then there was a fateful Dallas morning. What might America have become had JFK lived? We’ll never know but one thing is clear: popularity with the people does not mean everyone loves you or that no one means you any harm.

Even JFK did not inspire this kind of enthusiasm in Canada however. The cheering and the sheer size of the crowd might well have suggested it was a rock star making an appearance rather than a president. Certainly the previous holder of that office never enjoyed this kind of reception when he came to visit. Maybe President Obama will in fact bring us change we can believe in. He won’t be the first to promise it but he may very well be the first the majority of the people believe can deliver it. I only hope the secret service can keep him alive long enough to see it.
